Frequently asked questions

Can I swim once I have applied St.Tropez?

You must not wash, bathe, swim, shower or exercise within the development time. You can swim once your tan has developed but swimming in the sea and chlorinated pools may result in your tan fading more quickly.

Can St.Tropez be used during pregnancy?

Yes, our main tanning agent is dihydroxyacetone, which has no known toxicity.
St. Tropez only works upon the uppermost layers of the skin and cannot get into the bloodstream from normal application. However, be aware that hormonal changes during pregnancy (especially during the first 3 months) may affect the developmentof the tan. Do not apply to the breast area if breastfeeding.

Can St.Tropez cover stretch marks or scars?

Yes, carefully apply St. Tropez Bronzing Lotion to the area with a cotton bud. Leave for at least 8 hours, wash away guide colour then apply your all-over tan as normal. If the tan is not dark enough, repeat approximately every 8 hours until the stretch mark or scar is disguised.I have vitiligo, which means that uneven pigmentation in my skin gives me patches of colour, can St.Tropez help me disguise this?St. Tropez will help to cover up Vitiligo. We recommend you apply St.Tropez Bronzing Lotion to the lighter areas as thickly as possible, dilute using St.Tropez Body Moisturiser and apply with a cotton bud to the darker edges if necessary. Then, allow to dry. Allow to develop, ideally overnight, before washing off the guide colour to reveal your tan. If the tan is not dark enough, repeat again.

Does St.Tropez protect me from U.V. exposure?

No. There are no sun filters in St.Tropez products so it’s very important that you still use a sun protection product with sufficient levels of SPF when exposing your skin to the sun.

How does St.Tropez work?

St.Tropez formulations contain a unique combination of two completely safe activeingredients that work together to give a gorgeously natural looking colour that fades naturally, too. The first, dihydroxyacetone (or DHA for short) is a colourless sugar that interacts with the amino acids in the surface layer of the skin to produce a temporary colour change – your tan. This ingredient is combined with Erythrulose, a naturally moisturising ingredient derived from raspberries, that works in the same way as DHA but it develops more slowly, giving you a smoother colour that lasts longer and fades more evenly.

How long do I need to wait before showering after applying St.Tropez?

Ideally leave it for 8 hours – the tan will keep developing for up to 24 hours.

How long will my St.Tropez tan last?

Generally, a St.Tropez self tan will last between 2-10 days, depending on your
skin type and how you care for it. To help make sure your tan looks great for as long as possible use St.Tropez Body Moisturiser, alongside St.Tropez Body Polish which should also be used every 2-3 days to help the tan fade evenly.

Is St. Tropez toxic in any way?

No, none of the active ingredients in St. Tropez have any known toxicity.

I have never used St. Tropez before, is there anything I should be aware of before following the application instructions?

Always conduct a small patch test in a sensitive area such as the inner arm 24
hours before full application, just in case of any reaction and to ensure you do not have any sensitivity to the ingredients.

What is the difference between St.Tropez self tan and gradual tan?

Self tan is a product that provides a medium to full strength shade. It is applied to the skin and left to develop for a period of time. The colour will develop for approximately 8 hours and will last 2 – 10 days depending on skin type and how you care for your tan. A gradual tan is a gentle tan that can be
built up to a medium to full strength shade when applied over a period of time.

What should I do if I think I'm sensitive or allergic to St. Tropez?

Although extremely rare, always seek medical advice if you think you have had an allergic reaction to St. Tropez products. We do recommend that you carry out a patch test 24 hours before using St. Tropez products whether at home or in salon, just to be sure you don’t have any sensitivity before using the product all over.

Why do self tanners smell?

The characteristic smell doesn’t come from the product but from a chemical reaction on the skin, however St. Tropez is different from everyone else because we’ve developed Aromaguard™, a revolutionary new fragrance technology, that replaces that tell-tale self tan aroma (by a minimum of 70%) with a soft, light, fresh-scented fragrance.

Why is St. Tropez different?

We’re different because we give an entirely natural-looking result, first time every time. When we launched we made a major technological breakthrough in self-tanning because only our formulation had a unique combination of DHA and aloe vera that prevented the skin dryness often associated with self tanning lotions. More recently we made another innovative coup by adding an ingredient sourced from raspberries called Erythrulose. Expensive, but well worth it, this ingredient helps boost moisture and give a more even tan that will last longer.

Will I turn orange or go too dark?

You will not turn orange – our self tan range contains a green pigment to help counteract any orange tinge. Our products are uniquely formulated to work with yournatural skin tone so, as your tan develops it will only go as dark as your skin would naturally tan. So you don’t need to worry about putting on too much – only missed bits can give an uneven finish.

Will my tan streak or go patchy?

The St. Tropez self tan range contains a guide colour so you can see exactly where you put it. You don’t need to worry about applying too much – only missed bits can give an uneven, or patchy finish. The St. Tropez Gradual range doesn’t contain a guide colour but it does leave a wet sheen on the skin so you can see where you have applied.
